Water is best, but tap water should be avoided. Bottled water is everywhere and very inexpensive. Ice cubes are safe as well, being made from treated water. Ice is also put in your beer to keep it cool. Speaking of beer, you can buy Beerlao anywhere, for around 8-10,000 kip per 640ml bottle at small sidewalk type restaurants, however, expect to pay up to 30,000 kip in a nice western style bar or restaurant. It is an excellent thirst quencher, and best shared with friends!
Good and tasty food is available everywhere in Laos, in markets, restaurants, and street stalls. In the cities, especially Vientiane, there are international restaurants for nearly every taste.
A few Lao dishes are cultural icons and should definitely be tried. First among these is probably papaya salad (tam mak hoong). It is eaten hot and spicy, often too much for the delicate throats of foreigners!
